Self Storage FAQs

What sizes of storage units are available?
Forward Storage units range from compact 5×5 lockers (about the size of a small closet, perfect for a few boxes or seasonal items) up to spacious 10×30 units that can hold the contents of a 4-bedroom home or a vehicle. Most facilities offer 5×5, 5×10, 10×10, 10×15, 10×20, and 10×25 units, with select locations also offering drive-up access, climate-controlled options, and vehicle storage for RVs, boats, or cars. Not sure what size you need? Our size guide walks through what fits in each unit type, or you can call us at (319) 234-5495 and we’ll help you pick the right size on the first try.
Good packing protects your belongings and lets you fit more in less space. Use uniform-size boxes (they stack cleanly), label every box on two sides so you can find things later, and pack heavy items in small boxes and light items in large ones. For fragile items, wrap individually in bubble wrap or packing paper and pack tightly with no room to shift. Mattresses and upholstered furniture should be stored upright when possible and covered with breathable cloth (not plastic, which traps moisture). Leave a center aisle in your unit so you can reach items in the back without unloading the front. If you’re storing for more than 90 days or in a humid climate, climate-controlled units protect against moisture, mildew, and temperature warping.
Climate-controlled storage keeps the unit’s temperature and humidity within a stable range year-round (typically 55–80°F and below 60% humidity). You should consider climate control if you’re storing wood furniture, leather goods, electronics, musical instruments, artwork, photographs, important documents, antiques, or anything else sensitive to heat, cold, or moisture. Standard non-climate-controlled units are fine for most everyday items — gardening equipment, sporting goods, plastic-stored holiday decor, vehicles, and outdoor furniture. The general rule: if you wouldn’t leave it in a garage or attic for a year, climate-control it. Forward Storage offers both options at most locations — ask us which is right for what you’re storing.
Three categories are prohibited at any Forward Storage facility, no exceptions: (1) Hazardous materials — gasoline, propane tanks, fireworks, chemicals, paint, ammunition, oxygen tanks, anything explosive or flammable. (2) Living things — no plants, no animals, no people. (3) Perishable food or stolen property. Also avoid cash, jewelry, and irreplaceable original documents (use a safe-deposit box for those). Everything else — household goods, business inventory, vehicles, seasonal items, college storage — is fair game. If you’re unsure about a specific item, call (319) 234-5495 and we’ll confirm.
Pricing varies by unit size, location, demand, and amenities (climate control adds about 20–30% to a unit’s monthly rate). Rough national averages at Forward Storage: 5×5 starts around $40–$60/month; 5×10 is $60–$90; 10×10 is $90–$140; 10×15 is $130–$180; 10×20 is $170–$240; 10×25 / 10×30 is $200–$320. Forward Storage runs month-to-month with no long-term contracts and no security deposit at most locations. Most new customers also get 50% off the first 2 months.
